Seven essential emperor penguin facts Emperor penguins are the largest penguins in the world.
They can dive deeper than any other bird, including other penguins. Emperor penguins do not build nests. Brood patches are flaps of featherless skin some birds have on the underside of their bellies. Like other penguins, emperors leap into the air while swimming, which is called porpoising.
This action coats them in micro air bubbles that help reduce friction underwater. Scientists think they might also just be doing it for fun. Emperors and other penguins have their distinct tuxedo look because, while swimming, their white bellies camouflage them against the light above, and their dark backs camouflage them against the depths below.
These are only penguins that breed during the Antarctic winter. Related cruises. Weddell Sea - In search of the Emperor Penguin, incl. In there are now thought to be around 54 Emperor colonies in the Antarctic. About half of these have been discovered by satellite survey and most of these remain unvisited. Emperors incubate their eggs during the long dark southern winter months. Courtship displays are intricate but copulation is quick and the female lays a single egg in May or June.
She spends the next nine weeks at sea, feeding. The male carefully balances the egg on his feet for between 65 — 75 days to keep it warm in a specially adapted brood pouch, and off the snow surface, before it hatches.
Then out pops a fluffy chick. They have two layers of feathers, a good reserve of fat and proportionally smaller beaks and flippers than other penguins to prevent heat loss.
Even their feet are adapted to the icy conditions, containing special fats that prevent them from freezing and strong claws for gripping the ice. But most remarkably, colonies of adults and chicks work together to huddle for warmth. Emperor penguins are the Olympic divers of the bird world. And the longest recorded dive was nearly 28 minutes. Without the warmth and protection provided by the male's body and the insulation provided by the feet, the chick inside the egg would quickly die, and so the male penguin has to remain where he is until either the egg hatches or the female returns.
Often the males will huddle in large groups for protection against the icy winds and storms. They have no means of obtaining food during this period and so they live on their resources of fat. Movement is limited to a few careful steps with the egg still balanced on the feet. The female remains at sea for about seven or eight weeks before returning, well fed, to the colony. She is able to locate her mate despite the large number of now very emaciated males present and she then takes over the final stages of incubation.
It is an amazing fact that if the chick hatches before the female returns the male is able to feed it by a process of regurgitation despite the fact that the penguin has not eaten for weeks.
